Doctor for a Day - Orthopaedic Edition

Media Invite

For real or not, how can anyone reject the invite to be a Doctor for a Day? I mean being a doctor has to be one of the coolest job in the world. I grew up watching all the amazing HK drama series about doctors and as a believer, hearing all the testimonies of healings from members who works in the medical field. Even my daughters who are only 5 & 8, loves all those doctor K-drama shown on TV. So for 90mins, both daughters became doctors.

Parkway East Hospital organized a special Orthopaedic Edition of Doctor for a Day. This is an educational tour, where children get to dress up and role-play as Orthopaedic doctors. They will experience performing bone surgery in an Operating Theatre setting and learn to bandage knees in an Emergency Room, among other medical activities. The tour has an additional factor of charity, for every paying children for the tour (S$25), the hospital will match with S$300 to sponsor Total Knee Replacement surgeries for the needy elderly to help them get back on their feet again. Applauses to all the hospital staff and organizers!

First to put on the uniform that momentarily turns the children into doctors.

First station – Briefing Room. This is where the children are briefed on what to expect for the tour, how to put on their hair net, the correct 7-steps to wash their hands, and most importantly, to have fun!

The children looked so cute in their slightly over-sized doctor’s gown and hair net. Attentive to what the doctors have to say.

Second room – General Practitioner. They picked up simple skills like wiping with alcohol wipes, ear thermometer and how to use the stethoscope.

_MG_2276

All the equipment are real, not just toys. Not even adults have the chance to try out such things, the children are blessed.

_MG_2278 _MG_2284

At the Accident & Emergency room, the kids learnt how to handle emergencies like a cut, and how to clean & bandage the wound.

_MG_2292

The doctor demonstrated with some “red ink” and some of the kids totally freaked out and chose to stand aside. I was quite worried that Joey will feel fear too, after her head injury last year. But both girls were braver than I thought.

Jayne is too young to secure her bandage. After the doctor helped her to secure it, she walked around in pride, only removing it when we reached home.

_MG_2306 _MG_2308

Nursery room is probably what my two girls most looked forward place. The chance to play “mother” to their baby.

_MG_2293

They followed a video’s guide, when the baby cries in the video, the doctors and nurses will guide the “young doctors” what to do. From cleaning and changing the diapers, to feeding, and patting the baby to sleep. Both Joey and Jayne tag-teamed and did a great job.

_MG_2309 _MG_2315 _MG_2316

The last activity room was probably the most exciting of all. The Operating Theatre.

_MG_2322

The patient is Mr. Drink Alcohol, he felled and broke his hand. So the group of young doctors need to give the patient injection, operate on the broken hand and screw in the supporting metal plates.

_MG_2331 _MG_2329 _MG_2333

Doctor Jayne, your face mask is too loose..

_MG_2340

The operation was a successful one.

_MG_2349

The last 2 rooms were the X-Ray Room and Graduation Room. Here the children took their graduation photos and goodie bags.

_MG_2350 _MG_2353

Oh, the Kuan doctors looked a bit jaded after the tour. But I’m sure they enjoyed totally and learnt quite a lot.

_MG_2357

_MG_2361

Before we left, the girls took to the mini-stations to learn more about different parts of Orthopaedic.

Thanks to the dedicated group of pretty doctors who made this an educational and fun tour for everyone, adults included.

The girls practiced their new found bandaging skills on their teddy bears.

World Cup 2014: Footballers are Superstitious People

The FIFA World Cup is known to be one of the, if not the, biggest sporting events the world currently knows, bringing together some of the best football players from all over. But besides the prowess on the field, these iconic players have some pretty interesting or plain weird quirks behind them too. This week, let me bring to you some of the superstitions the players believe in and practice, you will be shocked.

Kolo Toure (Liverpool)
The Ivorian insists on being the last player to come onto the pitch. It sounds a harmless enough superstition, until it landed the former Arsenal player a yellow card during a Champion League game. With Toure’s central-defensive partner receiving half-time treatment on a injury, Toure refused to come out before him and the game restarted with both of them. Toure eventually took the field without the referee’s permission and got yellow-carded.

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)
The once untouchable Iker Casillas is another victim of the superstitious virus. He changes his shirt from one game to the next if he concedes a goal, cuts the sleeves off his shirt and touches the crossbar each time his team scores or concedes a goal. And his most disgusting act of superstition (thankfully, he has kicked that habit), is to wear his socks inside-out during matches.

Javier Hernandez (Manchester United)
This is probably the most common superstitious move of all, the Mexican national team’s star striker drops to his knees in prayer before each match. He reportedly inherited the ritual from his father, who also represented his country at an international level.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
The Portuguese team captain and Real Madrid forward is widely known as the world’s best player, the world’s most expensive player, and the player with the ever-changing hairstyles. He is also known for his famously weird pre-game ‘rituals’. He always steps onto the pitch with his right foot first. He must touch the ball before leaving the dressing room. He insist on sitting alone in the back row and he must be the last one to leave the bus.

Leighton Baines (Everton)
Before each match, the Everton player walks on to the field, then unties and reties his shoelaces. When asked why he does it, he doesn’t even know why.

Now I have given you something extra to look for in the upcoming games in this World Cup or for any other games. But before that, it’s time for the 3rd and last contest giveaway!

Sentosa Wings of Time

Following the success of Sentosa’s Musical Fountain and the recently ended Songs of the Sea, which had over 5,000 shows over seven years, Sentosa’s latest signature night extravaganza, is a creative and technical marvel - Wings of Time.

DSC_1117

Set on the amazing sunset of Sentosa Beach, Wings of Time is a ticketed performance, with daily shows at 7:40pm and 8:40pm along Siloso Beach. Premium seats are available at S$23 per person, while standard seats are at S$18 (standard rate), and S$15 (for local residents). Tickets can be purchased online at www.wingsoftime.com.sg or on site at the ticketing counters.

Wings of Time redefines conventional story-telling with a poetic take to a tale of friendship and courage.

DSC_1121

The story of two teenagers, Rachel and Felix, who help a bird-like creature, Shahbaz, find its way home, comes to life through an experiential fusion of multimedia effects, a catchy music score, and live talent performance.

Can you see Rachel and Felix? They are on the second and third panel of the stage.

Here are some reasons to watch Wings of Time:
1. It’s the world’s only permanent night show of its kind.
2. You need a short and cool chill-out idea. The exciting show takes just 25 mins, perfect to fit around dinner plans.
3. You want to show overseas friends what modern SIngapore is all about. This is Singapore-style entertainment at its best.
4. A chance for quality family time. Have fun with your family and allow the kids especially to share their imaginative impressions after.
