Masons Premium DIY Terrarium Kit

 Sponsored Review
[A special post by Joey Kuan]

A few weeks ago, Masons sent us their premium DIYterrarium Kit for a review. Which naturally gained huge excitement as we had been to several terrarium making classes also by masons in the past and had always enjoyed them thoroughly.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this terrarium kit, which is now on sale on the masons’ website, included materials for a perfect Saturday project:
1 glass bowl ~ 1 set of gardening tools ~ 1 bag of mix soil ~ 3 pots of succulents
3 bags of decorative pebbles ~ 1 drip bottle ~ 1 bag of figurines

The packaging for the materials provided are also re-sealable for future use!

So, on the very next Saturday, we all gathered together in our living room and got to work piecing together our terrarium, which was a rather simple procedure as the kit also included an instruction manual! Allowing us to follow each step and add our own twists to them.

The procedure was simple but very fun to carry out because who doesn’t love a little hands-on activity, especially for young children, as a way to create their own terrarium with decorations they placed themselves.

The procedure is as follows:

  • First, fill the bottom of the glass bowl with small rocks [please caution around young children]

  • Secondly, fill the bowl with the mix soil provided in convenient re-sealable bags, to the half-way mark, enough to completely cover the bottom of the succulents and hold them in place. [Don’t be afraid to get your surroundings a little dirty while pouring in the soil, it’s all part of the process]

  • Thirdly, you can start putting your succulents into the bowl or you can put the decorative pebbles first, whichever you fancy [note: the succulents can be fragile, so do be careful when taking them out their pots]

  • From there on, you can add in the different decorative pebbles/rocks and the figurines provided in the kit as well! Personally, I found the flamingo figurines really cute and the perfect addition to the terrarium, giving it a bright and homely feel.

  • The gardening tools provided will serve very useful as well in arranging the plants, the soil around them, and the decorations you put in. As a bonus, they also serve useful for future projects or just as decorations around the house.
  • The drip bottle is to easily water your plants weekly, and has exactly the right capacity to water all four succulents provided thoroughly!

Time to reveal our final product!

How do you like it? It was honestly a really enriching and fun experience, being able to create and decorate our very own terrarium, especially with such pretty plants. The decorations suited the plants provided and the huge glass bowl we used as well!

Throughout the process, there wasn’t a single time where we were confused about what to do or how to go about piecing together the terrarium as the instructions were very clear and simple to follow!

These kind of projects where there is a lot of freedom to do what we want and decorate it to suit our likings, my family would specially make time for them as all the opportunities we have gotten so far have been really fun and interesting.

The last time we made DIY terrariums, also by Masons, was at an event in Garden’s By the Bay. There was a workshop and we had the chance to create mini terrariums which we loved very much. That was why when the news about this review came about, we were all very excited.

Generally, I think that this DIY kit is something that will definitely garner your family’s attention and get them to spend an hour or two away from gadgets to create the terrarium together! Especially for children that may have become restless due to the long hours stuck at home because of COVID, this DIY kit will definitely entertain them! It is a great family-bonding activity, and your family can take turns watering the plants every week.

Thank you Masons for sending us this DIY kit, we had a really fun time putting it together as a family!

Children’s Festival @ Gardens by the Bay

Media Invite

March school holidays are here!
This 1-week break is usually the time when kids can take a short break (preferably with minimum homework) before moving on to the mid-year exams in less than 1.5 months time.
So, enjoy the holidays and don’t stay indoor! It is the best time to bring the kids outdoor for some activities and fun!

Gardens by the Bay has brought in life-size colourful dinosaurs for the month of March! Starting from 10 Mar – 2 Apr 2017, you can bring your kids and join Brachy and his friends for entertaining activities like dino-egg hunt, carnival rides, games, crafts, workshops, and even music from the movie “Jurassic Park” performed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra!

Creative Crafts
Head on down to the corridor leading towards The Meadows or the Supertrees. Have fun with rainbow colours and get creative with crafts like Keychain Shrinking and Pipe Cleaner Sculptures using the simplest materials. Certain activities are free, but others may have minimum charges.

Sand Art is always a big hit for all kids. Even for Joey, the chance to play with coloured sands and customized her own bookmark is a sure hit.

Carnival Rides & Games
What outdoor fun is complete without the carnival fun? Rides and games booths are situated all around the garden for kids and adults to enjoy a time of laughter and “anguish” (when you missed).
Tickets are priced at S$2.50 each, with the minimum of 2 tickets for each game or ride. Pretty costly in my personal opinion, but nothing is too expensive to see the seriousness of the kids’ faces when they play and the fun they have on the rides.

Jayne is at a slight disadvantage because of her height, but Joey on a few occasions were pretty close in hitting one of the balls.

This stall proves to be a huge challenge for the girls. Unable to control their excitement, they threw all the balls so hard, none of it landed on the cups but rather all bounced out of the table. Next time maybe.

After all the fun and running around, it’s a good time to just bring out the picnic mat and rest at The Meadows for some performances. You can get your picnic snacks, drinks or food just beside where there are a few stalls set up for your convenience.

For S$20/child, you can experience something different and super fun at the Terrarium & Excavation Workshop organized by The Learning Lab.

Building a Dinosaur Terrarium. All materials will be provided, like the glass jar, the gravels, soil, coloured sand, Fittonia plant, water and the “fossil” dinosaur figurine.

DSC_9195 DSC_9196

Joey started by spreading the gravel over the base of the glass jar evenly, as this serves as a drainage for water. Next is to pour in the soil on top of the gravel.

Create a hole in the soil for the stalk of fittonia plant to be inserted in.

IMG_2718

Love it when I see how Joey carefully place in the plant and took extra effort to make sure that the soil covers the roots properly. Since P1 she has a special interest for science. And she totally enjoyed the workshop.

Spray water on the sides of the terrarium and on the plants to remove excess soil, as well as moisten the soil.

Lastly, decorate the soil bed with coloured sand and some more gravel. We are almost done.

Before we headed home, we took one more walk around the place to take some photos of the Dinosaurs on display.

Brachy the blue Brachiosaurus, standing at 16m tall. You won’t miss him.

Rexy the red Tyrannosaurus at 9m tall.

Tricey the yellow Triceratops at 7m tall.

Anky the purple Ankylosaurus at 3m tall.

Paramummy & Parasi, the pink Parasaurolophus at 4m & 2.4m tall respectively.

If all these are too fierce-looking for you or the kids, then look out for the more friendly and cute dino walking around for a photo.

Have a wonderful March holidays!

Parents, just bear with it.. It’s all for the children.
