World Cup 2014: Footballers are Superstitious People

The FIFA World Cup is known to be one of the, if not the, biggest sporting events the world currently knows, bringing together some of the best football players from all over. But besides the prowess on the field, these iconic players have some pretty interesting or plain weird quirks behind them too. This week, let me bring to you some of the superstitions the players believe in and practice, you will be shocked.

Kolo Toure (Liverpool)
The Ivorian insists on being the last player to come onto the pitch. It sounds a harmless enough superstition, until it landed the former Arsenal player a yellow card during a Champion League game. With Toure’s central-defensive partner receiving half-time treatment on a injury, Toure refused to come out before him and the game restarted with both of them. Toure eventually took the field without the referee’s permission and got yellow-carded.

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid)
The once untouchable Iker Casillas is another victim of the superstitious virus. He changes his shirt from one game to the next if he concedes a goal, cuts the sleeves off his shirt and touches the crossbar each time his team scores or concedes a goal. And his most disgusting act of superstition (thankfully, he has kicked that habit), is to wear his socks inside-out during matches.

Javier Hernandez (Manchester United)
This is probably the most common superstitious move of all, the Mexican national team’s star striker drops to his knees in prayer before each match. He reportedly inherited the ritual from his father, who also represented his country at an international level.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
The Portuguese team captain and Real Madrid forward is widely known as the world’s best player, the world’s most expensive player, and the player with the ever-changing hairstyles. He is also known for his famously weird pre-game ‘rituals’. He always steps onto the pitch with his right foot first. He must touch the ball before leaving the dressing room. He insist on sitting alone in the back row and he must be the last one to leave the bus.

Leighton Baines (Everton)
Before each match, the Everton player walks on to the field, then unties and reties his shoelaces. When asked why he does it, he doesn’t even know why.

Now I have given you something extra to look for in the upcoming games in this World Cup or for any other games. But before that, it’s time for the 3rd and last contest giveaway!

World Cup 2014: WAGs

If you are wondering what is WAG, then most likely you are not a football fan. So let me take this opportunity to introduce to you this media term or acronym used to refer to the Wives And Girlfriends of high-profile sportsmen. The term WAG was first used by the British tabloid press to refer to the wives and girlfriends of high-profile footballers, originally the England national football team. And needless to say, one of the pioneer of the WAGs is Victoria Beckham, wife of then England captain David Beckham.

But let’s not dwell on the past. Let’s look at some of the WAGs of this year’s World Cup stars, and decide who will be your Top 5 choice!

World Cup 2014: How to Stay Awake After a Game?

The group round is over! How is everyone coping after 2 weeks (yes, it’s only that long) of World Cup actions? Spain gave us the best reason to continue watching this year’s World Cup, because no team is guaranteed a walkover on the biggest football stage. Either play with passion and lose (Australia) or play like s*** and lose (Spain), the World Cup promises greater excitement as we edge towards the last 16 positions.

IN:

Brazil Mexico Netherlands Chile

Colombia Greece Costa Rica Uruguay

France Switzerland Argentina Nigeria

Germany USA Belgium Algeria

OUT:

Croatia Cameroon Spain Australia

Cote D'Ivoire Japan Italy England

Ecuador Honduras Bosnia-Herzegovina Iran

Portugal Ghana Russia South Korea

How do you keep yourself awake after all the morning hours of watching the games? Here are some tips to stay sane and hopefully keep your job.

Take short walks
If you really think you are dozing off in the office, this is the perfect chance to stand up, and walk to a nearby colleague for a short talk or maybe just go downstairs for a short walk around the compound, relax those tiring muscles and eyes.

 Take a walk (2)

Listen to music
Turn the volume slightly down, this will force your mind to stay active as it focuses on listening closely.

Listen to music (Work)

Munch on healthy snacks
Load up the fruits and veggies for proper nutrition. For best effect, add in BRAND’S ® Essence of Chicken.

Do simple exercises
It is scientifically proven that our brain can only concentrate on one thing for not more than 40-45mins. So do some simple stretching or twisting of your body to help improve blood circulation.

 Simple exercises

Use cold water
If all still don’t work, then your last resort is ‘cold treatment’. Splash cold water on your face and I’m quite sure that would momentarily shock you up.
