Burning: Aye or Nay?

I believe you must have read about the recent uproar among the netizens in regards to a group of children and parents appearing to be burning textbooks following the recent PSLE.

Burning

This really sparked a discussion whether the action was a form of degrading knowledge and education, while some questioned why the books were not given to needy students instead.

However, the parent who organised the burning to celebrate the end of his son’s PSLE clarified that textbooks had not been set on fire, but only assessment papers and schoolwork, as they were the sources of stress.

DJ Burning

In our current society, we are getting used to comment quickly on what others are doing, without sparing a second thought on what are the consequences of doing so.

To be fair, the act of burning textbooks or assessment books is not something easily accepted in many context. Personally, the act reminds me of the infamous 焚書坑儒 (burning of books and burying of scholars) events that happened around the Qin Dynasty. Probably because of such historical tragic, the current books burning event brought about more heat than expected. Granted that the person who initiated the act, DJ Arnold Gay is not Chinese, thus he may not know the significance of doing such a thing.

A friend commented on his Facebook saying, “What the children and parents did could have been what we would have hoped to do at some point of our schooling days. Just that we didn’t have the guts back then.”

Don’t get me wrong, I am not for burning books. In fact, I am leaning towards the group that felt that pinch because the books (textbooks or assessments) can really be a blessing to many needy students around. However, I also feel that maybe some of us are too fast to condemn and may have posted certain remarks that are not necessary.

Just think of what would the involved children be thinking now? After a celebration party, now they are in the lime light for not respecting knowledge, for not being considerate to the needy, etc. Aren’t the children stressed enough from all the examinations (PSLE)? Why do we still want to add on to it? Of course, some may argue that the fault is with the parents, but again, who are we to comment?

Digging deep into the entire issue, maybe the root cause is the education system in Singapore. Is it producing educated children at the expense of having stressed out kids? Are we stifling the creativity of the children but setting a not so necessary examination bar?

I don’t know. What I do know is, in 6 years time, my Joey will be going through the same system and how will she handle it? Will I be like most Singaporean parents, sitting through PSLE again but this time with my child?

Oh God, please help me!

My Daughter Reads My Blog

How cool is that? When I started this blog to write something about my 2 daughters, I was hoping one day they will start to read about it. Then it would be like an open letter from a Dad to his Daughters. But ever since Joey, now 7 years old, starts to read my blog posts, the “cool” factor has diminished greatly and in comes the “fear” factor.

Why do I say that? Here are 3 reasons to support my case.

(1) She corrects my writing manner.

We all know that some times when we write, there is a tinge of exaggeration. To stress a stronger feeling of frustration or despair or happiness, we may write like, “the food was so nice, I think I can go to heaven after tasting it”, or “the taxi driver was so rude, I almost smack him on the head”. At this point, my righteous daughter will pause on that line I wrote and turn to me with a puzzling look and commented, “Daddy, you didn’t go to heaven right? Why did you say you can go to heaven?” or “Daddy, you didn’t hit the driver right? Why you write it this way?”

Speechless.. I can only explain, Papa is just joking. I feel like a cyber-criminal caught doing the wrong thing.

(2) She corrects my chronological sense.

Blogging is a very relaxed activity, mainly to jot down memories and share with friends. So I don’t really care much about how the event happen or the order of occurrence. But for a 7 years old girl, fact is fact. If you have watched the movie first then eat ice-cream, then it should be in that order.

Speechless again.. I can only explain, Papa is getting old and forgetful.

(3) She corrects my photos.

This is probably the most humbling of all three reasons. I choose to think that the photos I post on my blog are quite good, at least I try not to post any blurry images. But my daughter has some other ideas about how a photo should be presented. She would occasionally point out that the angle of my shoot is not nice, the facial expression is not right, the place is not nice, the background is too dark, etc etc..

Totally speechless!! I can only ask for forgiveness and tell her I will improve on my photography skills. Then she will turn back to the post and nod with approval.

Tell me you don’t feel sorry for me.. =p

Hello? Are You Daddy?

Joey is old enough to memorise our mobile numbers. That is extremely important, cos if she is ever lost in a shopping mall or in a crowd (I pray that will never happen), she can approach someone and call us. Neat, right?

Not entirely right…

A recent call conversation from Joey went like this:

Joey: Daddy, I want to talk to Mommy?

Me: Mommy is busy working, do you want to talk to me instead? (that was the beginning of my mistake)

Joey: Daddy, what time will you be back tonight? Are you going to work late? Are you coming home with Mommy? Will you be coming home like usual time?

Me: Yes, we are coming home after work, not working late. What do you want to talk about?

Joey: Daddy, when you come back, remember to…. buy 1 duck rice for Nai Nai, buy 1 duck rice for Mei Mei, buy 1 duck rice for me. Also Nai Nai wants kopi-o, buy 1 kopi-o for her.

Me: (a bit sian liao) okay…

Joey: Must be hot kopi-o ah.. Mr kopi-o…

Me: Who?

Joey: You are Mr kopi-o… Mr kopi-o…

Who taught her to memorise my mobile number??

Jayne: Lime 就是早餐

Attempting to have a proper conversation with Jayne is sometimes so hilarious.

One afternoon, I was lying on the couch in the living room and Kless is cooking lunch. Little Jayne came bouncing (literally) happily and announced “Lime” is ready soon. That sparked off a very funny conversation for a boring afternoon.

J: papa, mommy is cooking ‘lime’
Me: what is lime?

J: lime 就是早餐
Me: oh… lunch..

Me: say again, lun..ch..
J: lime!

Me: mommy 煮这么菜?
J: mommy 煮两个菜

Me: 两个什么菜?
J: lime!

*repeat para 3-5*

Me: lunch is 午餐,不是早餐
J: lime 就是早餐

GIVE UP!
