I Am My Girls

The past one month more has been an emotional roller-coaster ride for me. After all the dust have settled, I start to think about many things and one of it is my relationship with my children. They are no longer just toddlers, but old enough to feel, to understand and to know. This was confirmed when I saw how Jayne who is only 5 years old, how she cried and grieved when her grandfather passed away. At this age, she already knew the truth and the loss.

One of my motto as a father is to be there whenever my girls need me. I do not want to be an absentee father. Many friends asked why do I have the energy and time to plan so many activities with my children, honestly, I do not know either. I just know I want to create memories with them so that when they grow up, they will remember me as a father who is there for them as much as possible. Father-Daughter relationship is not easy. I cannot participate in their interests like dolling up or dressing up, but I brought them for manicure before, I hope that counts.

Joey is 8 years old now, sometimes I see that emo state of mine in her. She is the thinker. She is the leader.
Dear girl, grow up strong and just know that I will be with you always. When Papa is tired and not giving you enough attention, don’t go away, remind me to love you more. You are not second to anything, you are the first in my life. Kisses!

Jayne on the other hand is just a bubbly girl. Always so sweet and heart tugging. I cannot imagine a single day without her, cos she will just brighten up my day immediately.
Stay happy always! You will be Papa’s lollipop. And I will be your protector! Stay innocent as long as you can, stay by my side as long as you can. Love you!

Most Tremendous Trio

This was the first time we visited Bishan Park, and what more, on an early 830am Saturday morning. Well, it was all for the Parent-Child Orienteering Workshop organized by the Lifeskills & Lifestyle @ People’s Association. Repackaging the PA’s image, this new approach is termed as the “Series of courses”, aimed to create awareness of the wide array of parent-child courses PA offers to the public.

And so we were invited to participate in the Orienteering event – The Amazing Duo, where the trainers taught the kids on how to read maps (good for the mothers too), use the compass and take part in simple obstacle challenges. Fun facts: Do you know that Orienteering is a feature event in the World Games?

The girls wrote their names and mine. Definitely added a touch of feminism for me too.

Instead of a duo, we participate as a Trio. It was a rare chance for me to bring both girls out alone. Now that they are much older and able to participate without me taking care of them so much, I actually quite enjoy the event. Maybe more to come in the near future. Father & Daughter bonding!

We started with the trainer, Sebby (Sebastian) explaining the ice-breaker games. We played Dragon-Wizard-Elves (the equivalent of Scissors-Paper-Stone), but with actions. Standing in a line back-to-back, turn around on command and display our group’s selection. The winner gets to tap the other team and the loser runs as fast as possible back to safety.

Pretty soon, the kids are all warmed up and sweating. Parents are slightly tired by now, hahaha..

Next up was the training on how orienteers clock in on different control points. Sebby introduced the use of an electronic punching and identification system.

The girls were given a simple map with different control points, and they were suppose to run around, reading the map and find the control points (different color cones), stick in the electronic key and move on to the next marker on the map. Simple? It was until Sebby mentioned the challenge of completing the route under 50sec.

After every try on the course, the timing would be printed out on a slip and we went for at least 10 rounds to finally complete the challenge in 50.2sec flat.

Last part of the orienteering race, the kids were taught how to use a compass to read the map. It was really quite interesting, even for an army guy like me, it was fun to teach our children how to topo.

It was a bit too tough for Jayne to understand, so she went off to play on her own. Which gave me the chance for some photo shoot opportunity. My cutie pie!

In an orienteering race, the control points are well identified by an internationally recognized orange and white symbol. Which is what the children will need to find using their newfound skills on reading the map and compass. Ok, I admit, we were the ones reading the map, the kids just pose with the electronic keys. Still, the most important thing is we both have fun.

All sweaty and tired. We are ready for a break and some lunch.

Lunch at the greenroom. Nice place, I think I would bring Kless back here for a more relaxing meal in future.

Jayne was all excited to win some prize for the day’s work and duly rewarded when we crowned the Most Tremendous Trio. No idea where did Jayne learnt the zombie pose from.

It was a great morning family fun at the Bishan Park. Leave you with this amazing photo taken by Jayne.

Unforgettable 8

This month we celebrated Joey’s 8th birthday with an ice-cream party at Swensen’s.

2014-04-05 17.17.00

The special relationship with Joey will always be unforgettable, cos every experience will be the first for me as a Dad. Seeing this little lady growing up so fast everyday really forced me to evaluate my priority in life more and more. Like some other children of my generation, having missed out ourselves a proper Father-Child relationship, we are constantly reminded to not make the same mistake.

It is so good to see Joey making friends in life and enjoying it. But deeper than that, I want to be her best friend too!

Loving a person practically is to understand her better. To know what she likes and dislikes, to know what ticks for her and what frustrates her. Love is also to create special moments with Joey, so that she will remember and know that she is special.

2014-04-08 20.20.17

Joey, papa loves you just as you are. Always remember that you do not need to change yourself to receive love, cos God created you to be like you. You are special and never will be the same like any other. I thank God every time I see you or think of you, cos you are the best gift from heaven into my life. Papa may not be the best at times, forgetting some of the promises I have made, not spending enough time to play with you, but papa never love you less than the day you were born.

Happy birthday my girl!

Family Wellness Day

Saturday is a sleep in day for me, but when the elder girl came back one night from school excitedly with a pink slip and announced that her school is organising a Family Wellness Day, I knew I’m not going to be able to sleep late last Saturday.

Seriously, how many parents will be so “on” to participate in such an activity where you need to reach the school as early as 7:45am to report and take the bus from Woodlands to Punggol? Yes, from the north all the way to the far away northeast. But I was so wrong!

DSC_8283

Caps on to ensure the girls can enjoy the morning walk without too much heat. Side note, the entire Kuan Family wore cap that day, a point that I am proud to have cultivated in the family, I am a cap-lover! =)

Apparently, Lor Halus Wetland is a popular place for the elderly too. We had a hard time crossing the bridge, but all was fine since the girls were also quite fascinated by the new place.

The peace and tranquillity is something money cannot buy.

One of the reasons I have always insisted on bringing the girls outdoor on the weekends is the chance to learn about things that they would usually not see or able to touch around a HDB flat. Like Mimosa aka Touch-me-not.

These two girls are BFFs in school. I can’t describe how happy I felt to know that my girl has a good friend in school. One of those moments only a parent will understand.
