Abbott Medical Optics (AMO) - RevitaLens OcuTec Solution

Product Review

As a contact lens wearer for about 20 years, finally I have a chance to do a product review on something that has been part of my life for so long. I first heard of AMO products when I was a Logistics Manager with one of the largest optical retail chain in Singapore. In fact it was one of the best selling products I have handled. So thrilled to be using the product again and also to do a review about it, thanks to omy’s invitation.

There were 2 products for us to choose from
(1) RevitaLens OcuTec Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution
(2) Complete Multi-Purpose Solution Easy Rub Formula

If your needs are like mine
(1) Looking for a solution that requires less rubbing time
(2) Wearing high-oxygen permeable soft lenses
(3) Wear your contact lenses for a long time, 12 hours or more

Then you are at the right page!! The solution for you is RevitaLens OcuTec!!

DSC_0900

If you are the manual-type user, here is the factsheet
- RevitaLens OcuTec uses the state-of-the-art technology to maximise protection of corneal integrity.
- RevitaLens OcuTec is highly effective against broad spectrum ocular pathogens in the environment with 99.99% efficacy and hard-to-eliminate Acanthamoeba cysts and Fusarium.
- RevitaLens OcuTec sustains high antimicrobial activity in lens case over time.
- OcuTec Activity reduces solution toxicity to cornea and hence minimize hypersensitivity responses.
- RevitaLens OcuTec greatly reduces stinging sensations during lens insertion, fewer complications including eye redness during contact lens wear and offers excellent lens wearing comfort over time.
- RevitaLens OcuTec is highly compatible with new generation oxygen permeable silicone hydrogel lenses and conventional soft lenses.

Before I end, here are some tips for healthy lens wear. A gentle reminder of the importance of knowing and practicing the correct contact lenses care.

RUB, RINSE & SOAK
(A) When removing lenses
1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling your soft contact lenses.
2. Place 3 or more drops of RevitaLens OcuTec solution on one side of the lens surface.

DSC_1016
3. RUB your lens gently from the centre to the edge for at least 2-4 seconds. (never rub in a circular motion, because it may tear the lens and not clean the outer edge surface)
4. Turn the lens over and repeat steps 2 and 3.
5. RINSE each side of the lens for 5 seconds with fresh RevitaLens OcuTec solution. Place lenses in the cleans and correct chambers of lens case and fill with solution. Close lens case tightly.

6. SOAK – allow lenses to soak a minimum of 6 hours for disinfection, cleaning, protein and lipid removal and conditioning.

(B) When inserting lenses
1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling your soft contact lenses.
2. Prior to reapplying lenses, RINSE each side of the lens for 5 seconds with fresh RevitaLens OcuTec solution to remove any debris on the lens.

3. RINSE the lens case with RevitaLens OcuTec solution and leave to air dry.

2 Hours With Jayne

While Kless enjoyed her “me-time”, a complimentary spa treatment, I had the chance to go on a date with my second girl.

After sending Mummy to her appointment, we walked to a nearby coffeeshop for breakfast. What better way to start the day other than a cup of milo drink? Usually Jayne will share a cup of milo with her sister, but today she gets to enjoy it all by herself. Special!

Once our stomachs are filled, we are ready to walk around the area in Chinatown and explore new things. Like taking a photo in front of a reflective window. A few people passed us and were intrigued by our self-absorbed fun with such a simple thing. But that is the fun with Jayne, simple things are enough to make her happy.

DSC_0753

Another moment where she saw this white fence and requested to take a few shots. The good and the bad.

DSC_0759

DSC_0758

As we walked towards the old buildings, we saw an old cobbler  Uncle busy mending shoes. Jayne just went up to him and asked, “你的手会痛吗?” So cute!

DSC_0769

Two hours is not a long time when you are enjoying yourself. Soon it was time to walk back to Mummy’s spa place. On the way, we walked into an aircon mall. Jayne took the liberty to choose a polo-tee and a pair of jeans for me.

What have I done to deserve this? Both are ladies’ clothes…

This is so fun! Looking forward to our next date.
I love dating my daughter!!

Yi Jia South Village Seafood Restaurant

Heard so much from colleagues that the food is cheap and nice. After much begging asking, finally got the name of the restaurant and address.

DSC_0543a

Situated along Macpherson Road, the restaurant is nested among a row of shophouses which is easily missed.

DSC_0544

The appetizers are surprisingly nice, pickled papaya and seasoned peanuts.

DSC_0549

The girls’ favourite, but got to control a bit.

DSC_0547

Joey’s front tooth is coming off, so she has to eat her cracker from the side. But that didn’t deter her to finish the entire basket of crackers.

DSC_0560

Since we are having dinner with my brother-in-law, we have to order based on his preference of food; no seafood and only chicken breast meat, if possible. So we didn’t get to try the Assam Fish Head and Salted Egg Pork Ribs. However, the dishes we tried were not too bad at all.

A must order for Kless whenever we eat out, Fried Yam Ring. Nothing special, the yam is done just right.

DSC_0563

One of the recommended dish, 纸包鸡. Most wrapped chicken will be slightly soggy or too dry, but here the chicken meat is just nice, tender and juicy.

DSC_0561

Curry Chicken 咖喱鸡丁, though it may look simple but the curry fragrance will definitely win you over. Coupled with white rice, it’s good enough to finish off one bowl.

DSC_0564

No meal is complete without some vegetables and mushroom, cos it’s the girls’ favourite, their grandfather will order this for sure. One thing I realised is the dishes like this vegetable is not too salty, which is just to my personal liking. Or for older folks.

DSC_0567

My personal favourite, another recommended dish to order. 菜脯豆腐. The 菜脯 is done till perfection, crispy and crunchy. If I can only order 1 dish for the day, this would be my choice!

DSC_0565

DSC_0569

The main reason why we were there, to try the famous Salted Egg Crabs, it’s on special offer $29 for two Sri Lanka Crabs. Very tasty and not too “gelat”. For me, the crab is too “deep fried”, you will end up eating both the meat and the shell, which to me is not the best way to savour seafood. But still among all the salted egg crabs I have tried before, this is the best.

DSC_0570

Last but not least, the dessert was Fried Ice Cream. $2 for each, just nice for an individual’s portion.

DSC_0574-horz

I am sure we will be back for other dishes. The portion is considered big for the price. We ordered 6 dishes and with drinks, the total bill was $110. For a 7-pax family meal, I say it’s a good deal.

Sentosa 40th Anniversary!

Sentosa turned 40! A carnival of fun and attractive promotions are in store as Sentosa celebrates her birthday with us.

How can the Kuan Family missed out on such a fun event? So we were there on 1 Sep to try out the first-ever outdoor ice slide by the beach in Asia.

DSC_0591

This featured two ice slides, measuring 5-metres and 8-metres.

DSC_0592

Kids or adults will slide down the ice slides in one of these colourful floats.

DSC_0601

DSC_0618

I think Joey was a bit startled by the cold slide. She looked a bit “stone-faced”.

DSC_0645-horz

According to the organizers, their worry was not the heat that will melt the ice, it is the rain.

DSC_0602

It’s “Cool” to be an Islander!

DSC_0595

Even if you the MRT train is late, you won’t be so “heated” up.

DSC_0627

Besides the ice slides and sculptures, the Kuan Ladies had an “eye-whirling” day at the beach. Check out the specs! Funny!

DSC_0611-horz

Magic show is usually the crowd puller in events like this. I think Joey looks really nice in those red shorts!!

DSC_0663

Stunning face-painting by a very patient and nice girl.

DSC_0667

Jayne chose flowers and Joey chose rabbit.

DSC_0671

DSC_0673

After 2 hours in the sun, Kless decided it was time for lunch. We brought along our Coasters vouchers, cheers!

DSC_0684

This is the first time we actually sat in for a meal although we have walked past many times.

DSC_0680

DSC_0683

Our delicious Aglio Olio Prawn Spaghetti.

DSC_0692

The girls are old enough to sit down and enjoy the good food with us. Looking forward to a day I can bring them out individually for a special Daddy-Daughter date.

DSC_0693

DSC_0691

I really love such impromptu performances. These guys just came out from nowhere and danced to the music. Cool!

DSC_0711

Another type of dance you would not usually see along the beach. Pole dancing! The girls are extremely amazing, the power and agility on the pole. If you are interested, they can give you a lesson for $25 on the spot.

DSC_0730-horz

DSC_0719

Head down to Sentosa this weekend. The reason is clear that Sentosa can entertain everyone of us for 40 years, and I’m sure the next 40 years will even be better.

Happy Birthday Sentosa!

National Day Rally 2012 - A Home With Hope & Heart

Much was said by PM Lee, but how much are relevant to us? How are we going to move forward with the nation? And from a father’s point of view, are our concerns (mainly child-related) answered?

Before the National Day Rally, I wrote a blog post on Maternity Leave vs Fertility Rate. I would like to follow up on the same topic after the speech by PM Lee. And also a few other issues that are closer to heart.

Building More University
PM Lee stated that Singaporeans have high aspirations. Every parent wants to see their child do well, and hopefully get a degree. The conclusion was to create more university places, focusing on applied, practice-oriented degrees, eg. engineers, physiotherapists, social workers. But at the same time, we must not churn out more graduates regardless of quality or employment opportunities. We do not want to make the mistake of having too many unemployed or underemployed graduates.

As a father: I do not just look forward to see my daughters graduate and get their degrees or masters. My greatest dream will be to see my girls grow up to be God-fearing children, a person with integrity, honest, loving, humble. If without all these, no amount of education achievements will matter. People are already labelling Singapore as a place where paper qualifications are essential, a must have to survive, I beg to defer. Shake off that “kiasu-parent” stigma.

Child Pre-School
The need to improve quality of pre-school education. PM Lee pointed out that the times have changed, families have evolved. Now we have more nuclear families, fewer children, more dual-income parents. He acknowledged that early years are important for children’s development. Hence good pre-school education will prepare students to enter P1 and provide many long-term benefits.

Current situation in Singapore, nearly all children (99%) attend pre-school. There is a diverse mix of pre-school operators: non-profit Anchor Operators (APO – PCF & NTUC) and many different private providers. Financial support (ComCare subsidies like KiFAS and CFAC) makes pre-school affordable.

PM Lee agrees that we are making progress but not enough. He mentioned that the government need to raise the quality of pre-school education for children aged 5 & 6. Also there is a need to keep pre-school affordable, especially to middle- and low-income households.

Role that government will play: establish new statutory board to oversee pre-school education. Provide and upgrade pre-school teacher training to raise standards. Bring in new AOPs in addition to PCF & NTUC. Give more support to low- and middle-income families. But do not expect fast results, PM Lee highlighted that transformation will take some time, but confident to see results in 5-7 years.

As a father: Joey is moving to P1 next year and Jayne will start her pre-school in 2 years time. I lift up both hands and legs to support the upgrading of pre-school teachers’ training. The reason why we are not willing to send our girls to the APOs like PCF or NTUC is largely due to the quality of the teachers we have sent and/or heard from other parents. It’s very difficult for us to send our kids (taking in mind that during this age of 5-7 years old, their brain is most receptive to learning) to pre-school when the teachers are speaking in broken-English. But looking at the estimated time-frame given by PM Lee, I don’t think I will get to enjoy the benefits for my girls. But hopefully the transformation will happen as spoken and other families will be blessed.

Having More Babies
The fact is as a nation, we are having too few babies! More Singaporeans are remaining single, or getting married later. Singaporeans are working too hard, married couples are having fewer children. Married couples are reflecting their concerns about having children. One mother stated that while she appreciates the schemes, eg. paid maternity leave, flexi-work arrangements, but she still feels pressure to work hard to fulfil her responsibilities in the company. She commented that “improve work-life balance” may encourage Singaporeans to have children. Another couple suggested to make childcare more accessible, longer paternity leave so that fathers can help to raise children.

What are some of the ideas to promote fertility rate?
1. Give housing priority to couples with children.
2. Extend paternity leave. Create Medisave account for each child at birth and put in a small hongbao to start off.
3. Raise pre-school standards and keep it very affordable.
4. More financial support for low- and middle-income families.
5. Improve baby bonus.

Ultimately, it’s not all about the money, but values and deep motivations. Singaporeans will marry and have children because of the fulfilment that a family brings. Mindsets and norms have to change – employer attitude, work-life balance, father’s duties. Strengthen the sense that this is home and this is where we want to raise our families.

As a father: To be frank, the reason why we are not considering to have a 3rd child now is the cost of having one. Already now, with my parents staying with me, and 2 girls growing up, we do not have enough rooms to use. Housing is indeed a problem and the ever-rising property market is not helping at all (a new 3-room flat with only 60+ sqm is selling at $400+K). Childcare and pre-school fees is another consideration. For 3 kids to be in school (one in primary, one in pre-school, one in childcare), the cost is easily 25% of a middle-income take-home pay. But yet once again, I agree with what PM Lee said, ultimately it is not all about money. Married couples (those without kids yet), should not put monetary consideration as a stumbling block for having children. All parents will vouched that parenthood has brought much fulfilment and joy that nothing else can compare. The fulfilment of having a family (incidentally, FAMILY means Father And Mother, I Love You), is beyond words or money. Mindsets need to be challenged and changed to see a real increase in fertility rate in Singapore. But definitely, more financial help from the government will assist too.

Disclaimer: All that has been said is just my humble views. In no way am I trying to be an expert in any topic. If you do not agree, so be it. No worries. Cheers!
