Flat Feet – Inherited?

Following on yesterday’s topic of growing pains, I would talk about flat feet today.

I have flat feet. From what I know, none of my family members (parents & brother) has the same problem.

Flat Feet

Flat feet, or pes planus, are a defect of the foot that eliminates the arch. The condition is most often inherited.

Some studies have indicated that the earlier one starts wearing shoes, particularly for long periods of the day, the higher the risk for flat feet later on. Other conditions that can lead to flat feet include obesity, diabetes, surgery, injury, rheumatoid arthritis, or use of corticosteroids.

Can you see the differences? It seems like Jayne has a slight possibility of having flat footed-ness like me.

Growing Pains

Joey has gone through countless nights of growing pains. And recently, we are seeing the same pattern starting in Jayne too. Personally I don’t remember going through such pains myself when I was a child. It is really painful for the child and painful (heartache) for us to see Joey or Jayne crying and there is nothing much we can do. So to save all the parents the same heartache, I have dug out some info for your reading.

What is growing pain? Will all children go through this pain? Read through to know more.

During the ages of 3 to 12 years old, children go through a growth spurt period. Along with this transition may be discomforting symptoms, such as aches and pains. For instance, a child might complain of having achy legs. When the child experiences it but doesn’t have a fever, then he/she might be going through growing pains. Growing pains are muscle aches experienced by children in their legs, typically late in the day and at night. Growing pains is not a disease nor is there evidence that bone growth could cause such a discomfort. But when children stop growing, or when the teenage years arrive, growing pains tend to stop.

One third of all children are said to suffer from this condition. Often, the pain occurs in the muscles behind the knee, the calf muscles and in the front of the thigh. Both legs are more apt to be beset by this symptom. Some physicians believe that this phenomenon happens because children are generally active during the day. There is a strong impact to the musculoskeletal system because of this over-activity. Children tend to overuse their muscles during the daytime, and so the symptoms of growing pains have the tendency to strike at night. In some cases, the aching starts before bedtime. For other children, aches may not be there prior to sleeping, but later in the night they could be awakened by the discomfort.

By morning, however, aches and pains are likely to go away. How is it to relieve growing pains? Daily exercises and stretching as well as massages could help. Allow your child to push his/her muscle by pushing the foot and toe as far as they can go. While doing so, massage you child’s calf and then the muscles in the upper thigh. Another helpful measure would be to apply a moist heating pad. Doing this few times in a day would help with the relief. Make it a point that you child continues the exercises even when the pain subsides. This will keep the muscles relaxed.

As for nutrition, make sure that your child gets enough iron, calcium and potassium. Drinking plenty of fluids is essential as well. These would prevent cramping which often goes with growing pains. A glass of tonic water or quinine would also help, as suggested by some physicians. Evidences are yet to be established regarding this, but giving tonic water to your child before bedtime won’t hurt. Other than home remedies, conventional medications could give relief. For instance, ibuprofen, such as Motrin, Advil, or others. So is acetaminophen such as Tylenol. As for aspirin, it is inadvisable to give it to children. If your child’s symptoms cause you to be concerned, consult the doctor. That way, a thorough evaluation and diagnosis can be made, and suitable treatments applied. And if the condition becomes alarming and is accompanied by other symptoms, your child would be in the hands of a qualified professional. Otherwise, growing pains will disappear in due time when your child has overcome the growth spurt period.

For us, we have a few items at home to relieve the pain slightly. Not entirely sure if it works, but we do our best. Another thing is to stop the girls from running too much during the day. That is usually very difficult too.

Cold pack from Guardian, this is very useful for a lot of things. I think it’s a must for all families with kids.

Special ointment only sold in HK. We asked a few friends to buy this for us whenever they are in HK. Believe it or not, it is very good!

As a father, I can only comfort myself and say my girls are growing taller with each painful night. The price to pay to be tall… =)

Children’s Room

Currently Jayne sleeps in our room and Joey sleeps with my mother. But we are thinking of shifting to a bigger house, with an extra room so that the 2 girls can have their own room.

Growing up myself, I never had the chance to have my personal room. I think it will be such a fun thing to have your own room and you can decorate it the way you want, buy the furniture you like.

So I asked Joey (no point asking Jayne yet), what does she like to have in her own room.

1. What type of bed would you like to have? Single or Double-decked bed?

2. What colours would you like to have in your room? One colour or multi-colour?

3. Do you want a computer or a TV in your room? Or both?

4. What else do you want in your room?

This is what she wants!

Barney

Hello Kitty Stickers

iPhone

Hello Kitty Puzzles

Spongebob Bathroom

Blankie

It’s so fun to hear what kids want in their bedroom.
Can some parents reading this give me some other ideas that could be or should be included in a kids’ room?

How To Play Jenga

I bought it quite some time ago, back then Joey was still young and don’t really know how to play Jenga.

But now, she has finally found out the fun for herself and Jenga has been her favourite playing toy for the past few days.

See how focus she is. Could be an Engineer in the making?

IMG_4006

She was explaining to me how the people are able to walk on the top level, jumping from beam to beam. Futuristic idea!

A view from the top. Proud Builder!

Sometimes I am so amazed by Joey’s creativity even in playing. Love you!!!

We Won The Chicken War

After 3 long weeks, we have conquered the CHICKENPOX virus!

Beginning of Dec 2010, Jayne contracted chickenpox and had to endure for 2 long weeks. I think because Jayne has a smaller face so her case looks slightly more serious than Joey.
Joey started right after Jayne has recovered. But thank God she only has to go through it for 1 week.

Do You Like To Sleep?

How do you sleep? What is your sleep posture?

According to the report form Psychologists, the sleeping posture of human being is closely related to our psychological state and personality. Here are 6 different styles of sleeping posture for reference.

Foetus Style
Self-defence, a style of protecting oneself. Have extraordinary analytical power, not easily to expose oneself. Actually he or she may have strong feel of dependence.

 A

Semi-Foetus Style
Balanced and stable personality. People sleeping towards the right side will do things very seriously, but his/her action may be quite slow. People sleeping towards the left may have a and will do things bravely.

B

Prostrate and Worship Style
This type of person have the mind to occupy the whole bed, hope to grasp all the things he/she wanted into one's hand. This type of person is conservative, not easily to handle things that are happened accidentally.

C

King Style
This type of person has stable psychological conditions. Have self confidence, open-minded and creative mind. This type of person always feel happy, easy to control one's manner.

 D

Criminal Style
The major key point for this style is the ankle, because he/she looks like being locked by his/her ankle, so that the person is given a name of "Criminal". This posture shows that the person is being hindered by something in his/her mind. His/her worry is being reflected by one of his/her ankle is being put on another ankle.

 E

Sleeping Lion Style
Posture showing that the person is refusing to sleep. This kind of person won't sleep long and difficult to fall into sleep, his/her conscious mind hope that he/she can be woken up as soon as possible.

 F

Joey’s sleeping posture. Looks like it’s a combination of Criminal Style (one ankle on another) and King Style. Self confident and also hinder by something in her mind. What does it means?

IMG_3884

Jayne’s sleeping posture. Prostate and Worship Style. Conservative and wants to grab everything. I’m really starting to doubt whether the test is accurate or not…
