In my opinion, the best place to soak in some CNY festive mood is Chinatown 牛车水.
The streets will be closed for visitors to walk around and purchase all the stuff they need. Or if you are like me, just there for photography, you will not be alone too.
And for non-Singaporeans, FYI this is the only time you can eat and throw your peanut shells on the floor without being caught and fined.
Be prepared to walk and squeeze with thousands of people. So strollers are not advisable, unless you are bringing an elderly on wheelchair, no choice then.
If none of the above deter you, then you are in for a great time.
In traditional Chinese culture, red symbolises good fortune & joy and gold (or yellow) symbolises wealth & happiness. So from the 2 main colours associated with CNY, you can find both joy and happiness. No wonder, CNY remains one of the most celebrated festival and the happiest time of the year.
So, what can you find in Chinatown?
Besides the “hanging” decorations, you can find lots of paper cuttings and couplets like these to create the mood at home.
步步高升,财源广进
There are a lot of nice food and CNY goodies for you to try and buy. But I am going to show you the few things you can always find in the Kuan family during CNY.
Pomelo 柚子
Dried Persimmon 柿子
Year Cake 年糕
Last but not least, Melon Seeds & Peanuts 瓜子, 花生
From the Kuan Family, we wish you a Happy Lunar Dragon Year
